Skin Cancer Removal/Treatment
Skin cancer is a serious condition that should not be ignored. The Dermatology Associates of Oakbrook Terrace utilizes several methods to treat and eradicate skin cancer. The method of treatment is typically based on the characteristics of the tumor and the patient’s age and overall health. Typically the treatment can take place right in our office on an outpatient basis.
Photodynamic Therapy
Photodynamic therapy involves using special drugs, called photosensitizing agents, that are activated when exposed to a light source. This type of therapy is used to treat sun damaged skin, as well as superficial skin cancers. Our dermatologists perform this non-invasive procedure right in our office.
Benign Nevi Removal
There are several reasons that a patient may decide to undergo the removal of nevi, or birthmarks. Usually the overriding factor is to improve the appearance of the area, thus improving the patient’s overall self confidence. However, removing a benign nevus can also reduce the risk of skin cancer, as well as improve the effectiveness of sweat gland activity in that area.
Cryosurgery
Cryosurgery refers to the application of extreme cold to destroy abnormal or diseased tissue. Cryosurgery is used to treat warts, keratoses, and certain superficial skin cancers, which would otherwise require surgical removal.
